Child abuse is a national problem, some would say of epidemic proportions. Reports of child abuse have exceeded the 2.5 million mark annually in the United States. Hundreds of fatalities related to child abuse and neglect occur each year. The term “child abuse” can be defined as any behavior directed toward a child by a parent, guardian, caregiver, other family member, or other adults that endangers or impairs a child’s physical or emotional health and development. Child abuse includes four major categories: Physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse and neglect. Child abuse and neglect affect all segments of society and know no socio-economic, cultural or religious boundaries.
Children have the right to be safe. Adults have the responsibility to ensure this basic right for all children. You can make a report of child abuse by calling, writing, or visiting your county Department of Social Services, the Child Protective Services Division at 106 E. Morgan Street, Brevard, NC or by calling 828.884.3174.
Any person or institution who has cause to suspect that a child is being abused or neglected is required by law to report.
